SmileDirectClub is looking to recruit the founding member of our Data Science team. The Data Science Lead will build mathematical models underpinning the company’s core services. Compared to other e-commerce companies of similar size, the set of problems that we tackle is incredibly diverse. They cut across web optimization, audience segmentation and lead scoring, paid advertising optimization, forecasting, and other predictive analytics questions. We are hiring data scientists to help solve these problems. The ideal candidate is a critical thinker, is passionate about solving mathematical problems with data, and is excited about working in a fast-paced, innovative and collegial environment. Additionally, this candidate has leadership potential as we look to grow out our data science team.
What you will do:
- Work with functional leaders to frame a problem, both mathematically and within the business context
- Perform exploratory data analysis to gain a deeper understanding of the problem
- Construct and fit statistical, machine learning, or optimization models
- Write production modeling code; collaborate with Software Engineers to implement algorithms in production
- Analyze experimental and observational data; communicate findings; facilitate launch decisions
- Maintain a balance between building principled, mathematically rigorous solutions and launching things quickly
- Work with functional leaders to maintain a prioritized backlog and create short-term and long-term goals
- Instill a spirit of continuous improvement in the team’s code, architecture, and processes
- Work closely with SmileDirectClub recruiting team to hire high potential candidates from diverse backgrounds
- M.S. or Ph.D. in Statistics, Operations Research, Mathematics, Computer Science, or another quantitative field
- At least 2-4 years professional or research experience
- Passion for solving unstructured and non-standard mathematical problems
- End-to-end experience with data, including querying, aggregation, analysis, and visualization
- Proficiency with querying languages like SQL, as well other programming and statistical languages such as Python, R, or Matlab
- Willingness to collaborate and communicate with others to solve a problem
- Inclined towards thinking ahead and building for the future
